Performance comparison between silicone leather and traditional artificial leather for automotive interior

We compare the performance differences between silicone leather and traditional artificial leather in terms of comfort, resilience, stain resistance, light aging resistance, heat aging resistance, hydrolysis resistance, solvent resistance, folding resistance, odor, flame retardancy and other different performance aspects.

Advantages of silicone leather for automotive interiors over other leathers

 

(1) In automotive interior applications, although PVC leather has a poor hand feel and a poor leather feel, it is cheap and has great cost advantages. It is still the mainstream in the low-end or low-end car market: PU leather has a full, soft, comfortable hand feel and a good leather feel. It can replace PVC leather in application, but because it is much more expensive than PVC leather, it has no obvious cost advantage. Therefore, it is currently mainly used in the mid-to-high-end car market.

 

(2) Both PU leather and PVC leather have some performance deficiencies in application, which need to be further optimized and improved. PVC leather has defects such as poor light aging resistance, poor safety and environmental protection, strong odor, and poor dirt resistance; PU leather has defects such as toxic DME solvent residue, poor hydrolysis resistance and light aging resistance, and poor dirt resistance.

 

(3) Compared with PU leather and PVC leather, silicone leather has outstanding innate advantages in terms of hand feel, resilience, stain resistance, light aging resistance, heat aging resistance, hydrolysis resistance, solvent resistance, folding resistance, odor resistance, flame retardancy, etc., and is superior to the other two traditional leathers.

 

(4) As a high-performance leather, silicone leather is expected to be used in high-end luxury models due to its unique performance and experience. However, there are also some application problems, such as immature technology, high cost, and process optimization. Therefore, it is necessary for material and parts suppliers and OEMs to strengthen cooperation and continue in-depth application research.
